The DMLS laser sintering is a rapid prototyping technology employed to build metal prototypes that will be tested for all functional aspects and so accurately finished that they can also be used as final products.
This technology ensures an extraordinary level of accuracy, leading to an unprecedented precision of details.
Moreover, given their highly ductile nature, metals involve employment of DMLS laser sintering in different sectors, goldsmith included, since they own the property of undergoing further treatments after production that are usually required in professional fields like medical sectors. In fact, the use of Titanium Grade 5, allowed for medical purposes, with the DMLS laser sintering can result in the production of plants and prosthesis for medical and dental applications.

  • Materials

DMLS laser sintering is the most recent technology for rapid prototyping and it is therefore under continuous development. Here follows a list of metals that can be employed with this technology, namely the most common ones in terms of general applications and sectors. Specific requirements will be subsequently considered.

  • Aluminium (AlSi10Mg)

Aluminum is extremely ductile but also durable. Its most relevant property, among the others, is a reduced specific weight. This results in very light but also resistant final products.

  • Titanium (Ti64 Grade 5)

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti 6Al-4V) is a widely used titanium alloy. It is extremely resistant to traction, but poorly ductile. It is also a solderable alloy. Given its properties, Titanium Grade 5 is very frequently employed in aeronautic and aerospace industries.

  • Stainless Steel (GP1 17-4)

Stainless Steel features excellent resistance to corrosion and extraordinary ductility. Any parts made from this material can be worked, electro-eroded, welded, shot-peened, smoothed and coated on request.
For this reason, Stainless Steel is employed in many sectors and various applications, such as:
  • engineering devices, functional prototypes, small and medium serial products, customized products or spare parts;
  • parts with high resistance against corrosion and requiring sterilization;
  • products for pharmaceutical, chemical and food industry;
  • parts of industrial processing;
  • medical devices.
